Actor Shweta Tiwari, who essayed the character of Prerna in original version of popular TV show Kasautii Zindagii Kay, says her daughter — who is now a teenager — was approached for the reboot.

As promos of Kasautii Zindagii Kay 2 tease television buffs, one misses actor Shweta Tiwari who was seen as Prerna, the lead female protagonist, in the first version of the show that was telecast from 2001 to 2008. Shweta, on the other hand, is returning to her first love, that is, theatre. Speaking on the sidelines of her upcoming play titled Jab We Separated, the actor confirms that her daughter, Palak was offered the title role in Kasautii Zindagii Kay 2.

As an actor who earned so much fame as Prerna, would Shweta have told her daughter to take up the role? “Yes, I would have told her to go ahead and do it. In fact, everybody was saying, even from Balaji (production house) that she should do it. It was she who said ‘No Mom, I don’t think I can do a daily soap and work day in and day out. I cannot do that at this point in time’. And not only Kasautii, many other television shows were offered to her, she said no to every show. She said ‘Right now I don’t want to do it. Even if I have to do it, then I’ll do it later’.”

The 37-year-old actor who started her career with theatre, says she never imposes her thoughts on her daughter. “I never force anything on her or tell her what to do. She’s a very intelligent girl. She wants to be an actress; she has already decided that if she will do anything in her life then it will be related to this industry. But, she’s the one who takes her own call and says no or yes to projects,” says Shweta who was last seen on small screen in TV show Begusarai.

And it’s not just television, but even theatre that’s beckoning 17-year-old Palak. Shweta says, “Rahul [Bhuchar, producer and co-actor in her upcoming play] was telling her to perform the role of my daughter in the play. But she said she just doesn’t want to divert herself from class 12th studies; otherwise she would have done it.”

Shweta is thankful that her teenager “understands and follows” her mother’s advice. “Palak is a very responsible and intelligent girl. She doesn’t smoke or have any bad habits like other kids of her age. She never demands anything.. Agar vo mujhe kehde ki on this birthday I need an iPad then she’ll wait till I give her one. She will not pester me or fight or cry for it. When I say ‘Right now I don’t think you need an iPad, you have a computer at home work on it, and when I think it’s the right time I will give it to you’, she will understand. Her deadline in the night is 8.30pm. No matter where she goes. If it’s a night party like a birthday, then her deadline is 11.30pm. She has to come back, and she comes back without having me fight with her. I have been very lucky that whenever I explain or tell her something, she understands and follows it. God has been kind.”

Kasautii Zindagii Kay (Trials of Life) is an Indian romantic drama television series produced by Ekta Kapoor under Balaji Telefilms.^[2] It premiered on September 25 2018 on Star Plus.^[3] It is a reboot of the 2001 series Kasautii Zindagii Kay. Anurag Basu and Prerna Sharma are two individuals meant to fall in love yet forced to go through several trials of life to be together.

Anurag and Prerna's fathers, Moloy and Rajesh are best friends yet Anurag's mother Mohini dislikes the Sharmas due to their middle class status. Anurag and Prerna study in the same university yet never really converse with each other. Due to a series of events, Prerna and Anurag start talking and slowly form a bond of friendship.

Soon, Prerna realises that she has fallen in love with Anurag. The day she decides to express about her feelings to Anurag, his former girlfriend Mishka enters the Basu house. Mohini seizes the opportunity to announce that Anurag and Mishka will get engaged soon. Prerna is left heartbroken. Amidst the chaos, Komolika makes her entry. Komolika is Mishka's elder sister and the daughter of Siddhant Chaubey, a powerful politician. She is arrogant and ruse and attracts male attention wherever she goes.

Meanwhile, Anupam makes Anurag realise how unaware he is about his love for Prerna. On the other hand, Komolika starts getting interested in Anurag. Eventually, Anurag and Prerna confess their feelings to each other and perform a marriage ritual, promising to marry each other soon. Seeing Prerna and Anurag plan a future together, Komolika decides to create misunderstandings between them. When Moloy finds out about it, he confronts her. Thus, Komolika plots to get Moloy killed in a car crash. However, Moloy slips into a coma and Rajesh dies.

Komolika asks Anurag to marry her in exchange of the papers of Prerna's house. Compelled, Anurag announces his engagement with Komolika. He breaks down on not being able to marry Prerna. Prerna is left shocked and betrayed. She gets hit by a car and is taken to the hospital where the doctor reveals that she is pregnant. Prerna recalls how she and Anurag had consummated their relationship the day they had confessed their love for each other.

Rebellious, Prerna enters the Basu house claiming to be Anurag's wife. Soon, Moloy recovers from coma. Prerna successfully exposes all of Komolika's crimes and gets her arrested.

Shweta Kesari from India Today said, 'Parth Samthaan and Erica Fernandes beautifully fit into the shoes of punctual Anurag and carefree Prerna. The grandeur and magnificence of the show will make your jaw drop. The makers have tried to retain the essence of Kolkata and Bengalis. Overall the show is a complete package of entertainment for soap viewers!'^[6]

Soumya Srivastava from Hindustan Times described the show as 'louder and garnish' and wrote that, 'The background score is excessive. It plays without reason and way too often. Whether the scene demands it or not, a joyful, somber or a comical tone is always there to force your brain into thinking that this is how you are supposed to feel right now.^[7]

Times Now commented that, 'The reboot takes you in the lives of Anurag and Prerna that were part of our every day lives and the first episode is all about nostalgia of the epic Kasautii Zindagii Kay.' ^[8]
